wp-content/themes/bracken/

Bracken

A field-notes theme for people writing outdoors, where the photographs are evidence rather than decoration.

== Description ==

Bracken is built for journals kept in the field: walks, surveys, birding lists, anything where the date and the place are part of the record rather than metadata. Archives lead with the date, and locations render as text with an optional map rather than the other way round.

Captions are set to the same measure as body text and sit under the image rather than over it, because a caption printed over a photograph is unreadable on exactly the photographs that need one.

Images are the heaviest thing here by an order of magnitude, so nothing else is: no webfont, 9KB of CSS, and no JavaScript outside the optional map.

== Screenshots ==

Numbered the way they ship in /assets/. Click any one to see it full width.

== Installation ==

  • Install and activate the theme.
  • Pick a style variation. There are three, keyed to season rather than to fashion.
  • Insert the Field Entry pattern for a dated post with a location line.

Location display works with any location plugin that exposes a taxonomy, and with none at all.

== Frequently asked questions ==

Does it need a map plugin?

No. Locations render as text. A map appears if you have a map block and choose to insert one.

How does it handle very tall images?

They are capped at 90vh so a portrait photograph does not push the caption off screen.

== Changelog ==

= 2.1.2 =

  • Fixed: captions inherited the gallery caption size instead of the body measure inside the Field Entry pattern.

= 2.1.0 =

  • Third style variation, for winter. Colder greys, higher contrast.

= 2.0.0 =

  • Converted to a block theme. Dropped the Customizer panel for location display entirely.
